Scope
All Indiana University campuses.
A foundational principle of Indiana University is its enduring partnership across its units, including faculty and librarians, to collectively advance the institution's mission. The establishment, revision, and retirement of academic policies will occur with consultation and input from the University Faculty Council.
Pursuant to IC-21-38-11, faculty governance organization actions are advisory only.
This policy shall supersede all campus, school and college, program, department, center, institute, and unit policies on any core or regional campuses of Indiana University.
Policy Statement
- Primary responsibility for developing a common academic calendar for all campuses rests with the President, who may delegate this task to other officials or a committee. Pursuant to a 2013 resolution of the Board of Trustees, the President or the President’s designee will involve the University Faculty Council in the development of or changes to the common academic calendar. Other stakeholders, includingbut not limited tostudents and operational units, will be consulted.
- The common academic calendar shall be maintained a minimum of five years in advance to allow time for each campus to align its calendar and schedules accordingly.
- Except as necessary to adhere to the common academic calendar, the campuses, professional schools, and individual academic units shall have responsibility for determining key scheduling matterssubject to the approval of campus chief academic officers.
Reason for Policy
An academic calendar policy provides essential structure and consistency for a university. It ensures that instructional time meets accreditation and federal standards, supports operational efficiency across departments, and promotes fairness for students and faculty. A common academic calendar is especially important for operational consistency and to ensure that members of the university community are aware of key dates across all university campuses, ensures consistent scheduling, compliance with regulations, and equitable instructional time across the university.
